Unearth Folk Writings

This stele displays a style of calligraphy typical of ordinary people of that era, not the work of a famous calligrapher. It merely represents the casual writing of a craftsman at the time. Many of the characters are archaic or variant forms, making them difficult to decipher. In other words, folk calligraphy, children's handwriting, and the Chinese characters used by non-natives all belong to the same lineage; they all serve as a reference point that allows calligraphers to introduce an element of unfamiliarity into their writing.
