Taiwanese Calligrapher Evan Hsiao Brings BEYOND THE INK to Prague

Core Cultural Management and the Taiwan (R.O.C.) Chamber of Commerce in the Czech Republic (TCCCZ) proudly present BEYOND THE INK, a solo exhibition by Taiwanese contemporary ink calligrapher Evan Hsiao, curated by Jeane Huang. Hosted at KAFKOFF Gallery in Prague, the birthplace of Kafka, from October 9 to 31, 2025, this exhibition presents Hsiao’s groundbreaking fusion of traditional Chinese calligraphy with contemporary ink art. His works embody a distinctive aesthetic with literary and philosophical resonance. Visitors are invited to engage with the artist’s bold, performative practice, where the act of writing transforms into a dynamic visual experience.

This year marks Taiwan Culture in Europe 2025, an initiative of Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture. We are honored to participate in this cultural endeavor in Europe. This solo exhibition offers an opportunity to share the distinctive qualities andprofound resonance of ink art with international viewers.

About the Calligrapher

Evan Hsiao yi-fan

Hsiao Yi-Fan, also known as Evan Hsiao, was born in Tainan, Taiwan in 1973. He has a master's degree in visual arts and a PhD in Chinese literature. He studied late Ming dynasty paintings and calligraphy, as well as contemporary Western philosophy, both of which have profoundly influenced his works. He is using his knowledge and experience to create artworks, integrating antiquity and modernity, East and West. The calligraphy, as an ancient Asian art form, gives Hsiao the opportunity of exploration and confrontation with contemporary art language, practiced in West, resulting in work which transcends cultural and temporal boundaries.

蕭一凡字道庸,號逸潛,1973生於台南。視覺藝術學碩士,中國文學博士。其學以晚明書畫文史和當代西方思潮為雙刃,由此自惕。冀集用鑑體,鑄煉文質。
