Song Four Masters: Su Dongpo

"Wearing a bamboo hat I am fishing near the river fogged by the massive morning mist. Two fish were caught and a San Yuan Seal was found in one of the fish’s stomach. The writing on the seal is exactly the Seal Script (Zhuan Shu ) which cursives like a scarlet snake with soaring energy. Return home, I asked the wise elderly who said its meaning is mysterious & unfathomable. Being inspired, I inscribed with golden tool these marvelous writings onto the white silky canvas."

The Calligraphic style of Song Dynasty esteemed Xie "Yi"—a natural, unpretentious mode of expressive artistic intent. Here, " Yi "refers to the expression of personal taste, sentiment, cultivation, and character, rather than the rigid observance of formal rules.
