Day Dream 98-19 (1998)
Ham Sup(1942 - 2024, Korea)
Mixed Media (Korean Paper)
85 x 62 cm (約25號)
Provenance: collection of a former French ambassador to South Korea and spouse.
This work comes from the high point of the Day Dream series in the 1990s. It incorporates handwritten Chinese characters from old books, Hanji made through traditional bark-based methods, natural plant dyes, and fully hand-torn, hammered, and layered textures. It represents a mature phase of Ham’s tearing, layering, and relief-forming technique and carries substantial presence as an international contemporary artwork.
A Hanji Pioneer Carrying the Spirit of Dansaekhwa
Ham Sup is presented in the original document as a central figure in bringing traditional Korean Hanji into modern abstraction. The surface is not simply painted with a brush: old handwritten mulberry-paper book sheets are soaked, dyed, torn, kneaded, and layered onto the support, then repeatedly hammered, pressed, and rolled to build three-dimensional texture. The process is framed as a fusion of an Eastern material spirit with the language of Western contemporary abstraction.
A Daydream of Material and Time
“98-19” denotes the nineteenth work of 1998, a period described as one of the most energetic phases of the Day Dream series. Looking closely, traces of old ink and the warm tones of natural dyes remain visible within the paper fibers. Under soft interior lighting, these details create a refined, quiet, almost meditative presence.
Composition
The composition may be read as suggesting the intriguing intersection of one male and two female figures.
