Day Dream 9940 (1999)
Ham Sup (1942 - 2024, Korea)
Mixed Media (Korean Paper)
65 x 51 cm (15號)
Provenance: collection of a former French ambassador to South Korea and spouse.
Created in 1999, this work is presented as a culminating example from the mature, high-energy phase of Ham’s Day Dream series at the end of the twentieth century. By this point, his mulberry-paper tearing and layering technique had reached a highly accomplished level; the changing tension of the fibers across the surface creates an almost musical rhythm, making the work a particularly desirable example from his 1990s period.
Ham soaked, tore, and hammered century-old Korean book paper, then reassembled old ink traces and the mottled colors of natural dyes within the temporal context of 1999. The result is positioned as more than an abstract image: the thickness of time and an Eastern material sensibility are physically embedded into the paper itself.
A Size No. 25 painting requires a large wall, while a Size No. 10 work can feel more intimate. At Size No. 15, Day Dream 9940 offers a particularly versatile scale. It can work as a focal point in an entrance area or bring a quiet monochrome, meditative atmosphere to a study, where soft lighting emphasizes its tactile surface and understated presence.
