A Written Self-Portrait

Calligraphy’s note: Broadly speaking, all philosophical and literary texts are forms of autobiography, just as painting is but a self-portrait. This Written Self contains no image of the artist, only a succession of names from past to present, East to West—figures without whom the artist would not exist as he does today.
The four sheets record the same content, but the brush accelerates in rhythm and pressure: from standard script to running script, then to cursive and finally wild cursive. Thus, an image of the “self” gradually emerges from writing itself.
