Woman with Lilies (1991)
Yifen Liang 梁奕焚 (b.1937, Taiwan)
Oil on canvas
60 x 72 cm without frame(20
This work comes from the early peak of Liang’s best-known and most market-recognized “Black Beauty” series. It depicts a woman in a red garment with traditional totemic patterns, carefully holding a bouquet of pure white lilies. The flowers and clothing create a strong contrast against the dark, restrained black-gray background. The lower right bears the artist’s signature “Yifen ’91,” identifying it as an early work from 1991.
Excellent date: 1991 falls within Liang’s New York SoHo period (1987–1999), presented in the original document as a peak phase in his development. Works from this period combine concise lines associated with Western Fauvism (including Matisse) with Eastern folk color, and are described as having strong academic and collector recognition in the market.
Highly desirable subject: the combination of “Black Beauty + strong red-and-white contrast + flowers” is presented as one of Liang’s most collector-friendly signature formulas. The red garment carries Indigenous or vernacular totemic associations, while the white flowers brighten the otherwise subdued dark figure, giving the composition strong decorative and contemporary appeal.
